I took Sam-e for about a year while back and found it very helpful. It had no side effects except that I had almost too much energy. You have to think about it--if. Sam Outlaw seemingly came out of nowhere with his last album, Angeleno. The album was the farthest thing from the outlaw sound I expected when I heard his last name (it was his mother’s maiden name). However, I guess you could say that he is an outlaw of sorts. Angeleno showcased a sound that is far different than the popular sounds that are currently coming out of Nashville. A brand of California country music that is all his own. He continues to blaze his own trail with his latest album Tenderheart. The album starts with a soft, country rock style. Then, if shifts gears at track 5 to a solid, old time country sound. You could really split this album into two halves. That being said, the two distinct styles do not fight against each other. They somehow seem to work together to show us a more complete picture of Sam Outlaw. The soft country rock sounds of the first four tracks (“Everyone’s Looking For Home”, “Bottomless Mimosas”, “Bougainvillea, I Think”, and “Tenderheart”) are great in their own right. My favorite of those is “Bottomless Mimosas”. I don’t know how else to say it, but that it has a California sound, complete with slow, twangy guitars and steel guitar mixed with Outlaw’s vocals. Then we see the shift to a more traditional country sound with songs with songs like “All My Life”, that has all the elements of a country songs: young love, the threat of a daddy with a gun, and a happily ever after ending. I also really enjoyed “Two Broken Hearts”, the story of two lost souls that found each other at their lowest points. It is not all love and lost love. There is even a song about drying clothes on the line, “Dry in the Sun”. It made me want to unplug my clothes dryer. The final two tracks seem to combine the two early styles to a sound more reminiscent of what can be heard on the Angeleno album. Fans of the light, country rock, and traditional country sounds may want the album to be totally in the style in which they prefer. However, I believe the differing sounds displayed on this record are pure Sam Outlaw. I love the mixture, and I say bring it on! It is not as if it is a forced marriage of sounds just to be eclectic. Sam Outlaw doesn’t seem to be swayed by popular opinion. He is doing his own thing. I am always looking for well written songs that are performed and produced in a way that supports the song. That is what you will find on Tenderheart. Give it a listen, and, maybe, like me, you will make room on your mp. CD or vinyl collection for Sam Outlaw. April 1. 5, 2. 01. While we have a little lull in new releases in the world of country music, I thought I’d take a look back at some of the best albums to come out thus far this year: Natalie Hemby’s Puxico–After writing hit songs for Miranda Lambert (“White Liar” and “Automatic” ),Little Big Town (“Pontoon” and “Tornado”), and Toby Keith (“Drinks After Work”), Hemby strikes gold on her solo album Puxico. The album showcases not only her expert writing skills, but as a performer, highlighting Hemby’s voice. Alison Krauss’ Windy City–It has been more than 1. Windy City is well worth the wait. Krauss and producer Buddy Cannon picked out just the right songs for this project, all cover songs. Krauss tackles songs from the catalogs of Glen Campbell, Brenda Lee, Roger Miller and The Osbourne Brothers with ease. Rodney Crowell’s Close Ties. Rodney Crowell reminds us of how great a songwriter and performer he is with Close Ties. His work has always stood on it’s on, but with the passing of Guy Clark, and with some of the songs dealing with Crowell’s relationship with Guy and Susanna Clark, Close Ties seems to push him into the void left by Clark’s absence. Maybe it just reminds me how precious a commodity storytellers and songwriters are. I recommend you giving Close Ties a listen today. Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives’ Way Out West–It is Stuart’s tribute The Golden State of California. When I read about the album, and before I listened to it, I expected it to be heavy on the preeminent country music style from California, the Bakersfield sound. You get some of that, but it is really a wide coverage of musical styles from the left coast: surf music, Spaghetti Western, cowboy tunes, and the sound of the Byrds and The Beach Boys. Whitney Rose’s South Texas Suite. Her follow up to Heartbreaker of the Year, Whitney Rose’s EP South Texas Suite showcases her talent’s, not only as a singer and songwriter, but as a producer. This six song EP is a love letter of sorts to her new home, Texas. Many times when you admire someone, or in the case, some town from a distance, it is a let down when your finally have your first encounter. It is evident that Whitney Rose’s admiration of Texas has lived up to all her expectations. April 0. 8, 2. 01. Rodney Crowell has done everything in his musical career: hanging out and collaborating with a who’s who of songwriters (Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark), being a member of Emmylou Harris’ band, writing hit songs, and having hits with his own recordings. That would have been enough for Crowell to remembered in the annals of country music history. However, the later part of his career has seen him release some wonderful albums that are showcases for his talents as a songwriter and storyteller. Rodney Crowell’s latest album, Close Ties, is no exception. Close Ties is a collection of storytelling songs, 1. Here are my thoughts on some of the tracks from the album.“East Houston Blues” addresses the hard times of his childhood. Speaking of Guy and Susanna Clark, they are mentioned with many fellow songwriters throughout the album (Towns Van Zandt, Willie Nelson, Tom T. Hall and Steve Earle ), including “Nashville 1. The song is a recounting of Crowell’s arrival and early adventures in the Music City, when it seemed that the content of the lyrics was more important than strict commercial appeal. Rodney Crowell is joined by Sheryl Crow on “I’m Tied To Ya”, a painfully honest composition. My favorite song on the album is “It Ain’t Over Yet” , featuring Rosanne Cash and John Paul White. This autobiographical song, featuring the harmonies from Cash and White, reminds me of sitting down with a family member that recounts their youthful mistakes, while issuing a warning to not make the same mistakes they have made. Not to preachy, just the right amount of nostalgia and regret. March 2. 2, 2. 01. You might be familiar with name Sunny Sweeney. Back in 2. 01. 0 she had a hit with “A Table Away”. I have heard her name mentioned with much accolades, not only for her singing, but also her songwriter. However, her name never moved to the forefront of the Nashville scene, like I thought it would. She left the Music City, and went back to her native Texas to try her luck as an independent artist. She released Provoked in 2. Trophy, has been released. I do not want to discount her earlier releases. Each one has been a part of the process Sunny Sweeney developing into who she is today. However, I feel like Trophy is the first album that feels like it is 1. Sunny Sweeney. The combination of a honky tonk tinged song like “Pass The Pain”, the classic country sound of the Jerry Jeff Walker cover “I Feel Like Hank Williams Tonight” , and the edgy sounding “Pills”, Trophy has something for everybody. In addition to Sweeney’s wonderul songwriting, she is joined by other writers, including Lori Mc. Kenna (“Humble and Kind” and “Girl Crush”), who co- wrote four songs on Tophy: “Nothing Wrong With Texas”, “Bottle By My Bed”, “Grow Old With Me”, and “Trophy”. The two most powerful songs on the album are “Bottle By My Bed” and “Unsaid”. The former is a song that covers the subject of infertility. More precisely, it deals with the guilt of those left behind to deal with the aftermath of a death. The regrets of what should have been done and said, things that may have prevented the suicide. These two songs are perfect examples of expert songwriting dealing with painful, real life situations. Trophy is an excellent album. I have listened to the album completely through three times. For me, that is a sign of a great album. If I can listen to it again and again, and not get tired of it, it is evidence that the project is well written, produced and performed. I highly recommed giving Sunny Sweeney’s Trophy a listen. March 1. 5, 2. 01. Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives have released a new 1. Way Out West. It is Stuart’s tribute The Golden State of California. The album starts with “Desert Prayer Part 1”, in what sounds like a Native American chant, overlayed with what I believe is a sitar. It sets the mystic tone of this album. Then Marty and the Superlatives crank into the Venturesesque “Mojave”, replete with the guitar work of Kenny Vaughn. In fact, there are three more instrumentals: the Spanish classical guitar driven “El Fantasmo Del Toro”,and two more surf- type tunes “Quicksand” (cue Link Wray) and “Torpedo”. The sound and lyrics of “Lost on the Desert”, a song recorded by Johnny Cash, makes you feel as if you are indeed lost on the desert.
