However, I guess you could say that he is an outlaw of sorts. Angeleno showcased a sound that is far different than the popular sounds that are currently coming out of Nashville. A brand of California country music that is all his own. He continues to blaze his own trail with his latest album Tenderheart. The album starts with a soft, country rock style. Then, if shifts gears at track 5 to a solid, old time country sound. You could really split this album into two halves. That being said, the two distinct styles do not fight against each other. They somehow seem to work together to show us a more complete picture of Sam Outlaw. The soft country rock sounds of the first four tracks (“Everyone’s Looking For Home”, “Bottomless Mimosas”, “Bougainvillea, I Think”, and “Tenderheart”) are great in their own right. My favorite of those is “Bottomless Mimosas”. I don’t know how else to say it, but that it has a California sound, complete with slow, twangy guitars and steel guitar mixed with Outlaw’s vocals. Then we see the shift to a more traditional country sound with songs with songs like “All My Life”, that has all the elements of a country songs: young love, the threat of a daddy with a gun, and a happily ever after ending. I also really enjoyed “Two Broken Hearts”, the story of two lost souls that found each other at their lowest points. It is not all love and lost love. There is even a song about drying clothes on the line, “Dry in the Sun”. It made me want to unplug my clothes dryer. The final two tracks seem to combine the two early styles to a sound more reminiscent of what can be heard on the Angeleno album. Fans of the light, country rock, and traditional country sounds may want the album to be totally in the style in which they prefer. However, I believe the differing sounds displayed on this record are pure Sam Outlaw. I love the mixture, and I say bring it on! It is not as if it is a forced marriage of sounds just to be eclectic. The combination of a honky tonk tinged song like “Pass The Pain”, the classic country sound of the Jerry Jeff Walker cover “I Feel Like Hank Williams Tonight” , and the edgy sounding “Pills”, Trophy has something for everybody. In addition to Sweeney’s wonderul songwriting, she is joined by other writers, including Lori Mc. Kenna (“Humble and Kind” and “Girl Crush”), who co- wrote four songs on Tophy: “Nothing Wrong With Texas”, “Bottle By My Bed”, “Grow Old With Me”, and “Trophy”. The two most powerful songs on the album are “Bottle By My Bed” and “Unsaid”. The former is a song that covers the subject of infertility.
